A new partnership between Sul Ross State University (SRSU) and the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) aims to expand opportunities for future physicians, particularly those committed to serving rural Texas communities.
Both universities are members of the Texas State University System (TSUS). Through the new TSUS Physician Pathway Early Acceptance Program, select Sul Ross students will have the chance to secure early admission to SHSU-COM while completing their undergraduate degrees.
The program identifies highly motivated freshmen who reflect SHSU-COM’s mission and show exceptional academic promise. Each year, up to 14 students from across the Texas State University System will be accepted—including two from Sul Ross State University.
Participants will receive:
- Personalized mentorship from SHSU-COM faculty and medical students
- MCAT preparation valued at approximately $1,500 per participant
- Two week-long summer internships with hands-on medical training
- Admissions guidance and enrichment opportunities throughout their undergraduate studies
To qualify, students must be Texas residents with a minimum 3.6 overall GPA and 3.5 science GPA, and must complete at least 30 credit hours by the time of application. Conditional admission to SHSU-COM is granted upon meeting program requirements and achieving a minimum MCAT score of 502.
The memorandum of understanding between the two universities is effective immediately and runs through December 2028, with the option for renewal. The first application cycle will open in Summer 2026 for rising sophomores.
“This partnership represents an incredible opportunity for our students,” said Dr. Dean Culpepper, Dean of the SRSU College of Health Sciences. “By collaborating with SHSU-COM, we’re opening doors for future physicians who want to serve Texas communities, especially in rural and underserved areas.”
