Feathers and Fresh Air: Birding the Big Bend Returns to Alpine This November

The Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University is partnering with the Holland Hotel to host Birding the Big Bend on Friday, November 14, 2025, offering participants a rare opportunity to explore private ranchland and witness some of the most sought-after bird species in the Chihuahuan Desert.

The event kicks off bright and early at 6:45 a.m., when birders will gather in Alpine before heading out to East Rim Ranch, a property opening its gates to birders for the first time. From there, the group will travel to Christmas Mountains Oasis, a beloved sky-island habitat teeming with hummingbirds, sparrows, and orioles.

Among the target species this year are the Chihuahuan raven, crissal thrasher, black-chinned sparrow, Scott’s oriole, and rufous and Anna’s hummingbirds.

For $160, participants will enjoy guided birding across private lands, expert interpretation from local researchers, and an up-close look at some of the region’s rarest wildlife. Special hotel rates are available for attendees at both The Holland Hotel and The Maverick Inn in Alpine.

Coffee, cameras, and binoculars are all highly recommended — because in the Big Bend, the early birds aren’t the only ones catching something special.
