A new book project titled Tiny Tyrants will explore how small-town politics in Jeff Davis County mirror the same abuses of power seen at the national level. The upcoming book examines the tactics local officials used in Fort Davis — from politically motivated investigations to false allegations — and how those patterns reflect the wider erosion of accountability across government in the United States.
The author, Big Bend Times publisher David Flash, says the project grew out of his own firsthand experience confronting what he calls “a miniature version of the same corruption and weaponized justice system playing out nationwide.”
“What happened in Jeff Davis County wasn’t unique,” Flash said. “It was the small-town version of what we’re seeing with the misuse of power at the federal level — the same mindset, just with smaller budgets and bigger egos.”
The book’s first volume focuses on the criminal side of the conflict: a series of investigations, warrants, and arrests that Flash says were designed to silence him and discredit his journalism. A second volume, planned for release after ongoing civil cases are complete, will address the tort claims and lawsuits that arose from the same events.
Flash said the project draws from extensive documentation — spreadsheets, timelines, and public records compiled over the last year — to create a narrative that exposes how officials can twist their authority when local checks and balances fail.
“Tiny Tyrants is about what happens when people with power stop believing the rules apply to them,” Flash said. “It’s a warning about what can happen anywhere — from a courthouse in West Texas to the highest offices in Washington.”
He added that any current or former county officials who wish to offer comment, clarification, or reflection are welcome to contact him directly.
“This isn’t about vengeance,” Flash said. “It’s about record. I want to show that truth, integrity, and persistence still win — even against people who think they’re untouchable.”
A publication date for Tiny Tyrants will be announced later.
