Hands-on event will teach preservation skills at Alpine’s Old School House
Historic Alpine and Alpine Community Projects are teaming up for a Brick Restoration Workshop at the Old School House, located at 207 E. Sul Ross Avenue, on Saturday, November 8, 2025, beginning at 9 a.m.
The event will be led by Alayna Jordan, an Architectural Conservator and current Assistant Conservator at The Alamo, who specializes in the conservation of historic brick, stone, plaster, and masonry.
Participants will learn the science and craft behind traditional brickwork restoration — from understanding breathable materials used in historic buildings to preventing moisture damage caused by modern coatings and paints.
“A prayer has been answered, and the historic Old School House is now in loving care,” organizers said. “We’re inviting the community to roll up their sleeves for a hands-on day of preservation.”
The workshop emphasizes that historic brick structures — such as Alpine’s Old School House — were designed to release moisture naturally. Using non-breathable coatings can trap water and lead to cracking, flaking, and long-term deterioration.
Attendees are encouraged to bring gloves, closed-toe shoes, notebooks, pens, and plenty of coffee for the morning session.
The event is free to attend, and community members can RSVP or ask questions by messaging Historic Alpine on Facebook or Instagram.
