The Intergovernmental Recreation Board convened a special session on Monday evening, October 20, to deliberate key leadership and financial matters impacting the Fort Stockton Recreation Department, according to reporting by Tristan Barragan.
The meeting’s agenda included the resignation of Interim Director Elizabeth Mata and discussion of potential financial reimbursements to the City, amid quiet but growing community concern about the department’s internal financial practices.
Resignation Accepted During Executive Session
During executive session, board members discussed personnel and financial issues behind closed doors. Upon returning to open session, the board unanimously voted to accept Mata’s resignation, effective immediately, according to Barragan’s reporting. The motion was brought forward by R.J. Bernal, seconded by Jennifer Gonzales, and passed with full support.
When asked by reporters whether the board would offer a statement to the community, Board Chair and Mayor Paul Casias stated that the only official action taken was the acceptance of Mata’s resignation. The board declined to comment further.
Leadership Unclear After Resignation
Despite the agenda including an item to appoint a new interim director, no action was taken, leaving the Recreation Department without a designated leader and raising questions about who is currently overseeing daily operations.
Mata, who was appointed on August 4, served just over two months as interim director. During her tenure, she managed daily operations while the board continued broader discussions about leadership structure, building renovations, and long-term planning, according to Barragan’s report.
Financial Discussion Not Made Public
An item on the agenda regarding financial reimbursement or repayment of city funds was not addressed publicly. The board did not disclose details about the source, amount, or nature of any funds discussed in executive session.
Efforts to reach Mayor Paul Casias for clarification amid community concern have not received a response as of publication.
Next Meeting Scheduled for October 27
