Day of the Dead Celebration Returns to Boquillas del Carmen, Coahuila

Just across the Rio Grande from Big Bend National Park, the vibrant border village of Boquillas del Carmen will host its annual Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) celebration on November 1 and 2, inviting locals and international visitors alike to experience one of Mexico’s most colorful and heartfelt traditions.

The two-day event, set against the stunning desert landscape of the Big Bend borderlands, will feature altars, traditional foods, catrina costumes, live music, and a variety of community activities honoring loved ones who have passed.

On Saturday, November 1, residents will celebrate with altar displays, a catrina contest, and a candlelight walk to the town cemetery. The following day, Sunday, November 2, visitors crossing from the U.S. via the Boquillas Port of Entry will be welcomed to explore local schools, visit community altars, and enjoy traditional foods such as tamales, pan de muerto, and champurrado.

The celebration runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. both days.

Boquillas del Carmen’s Day of the Dead is known for blending cultural heritage with cross-border friendship, drawing Big Bend National Park visitors eager to experience Mexican tradition along the Rio Grande.

Visitors are reminded to bring valid travel documents for re-entry into the United States after visiting the event.
