The Big Bend Open Road Race announced a new all-time record this weekend, with John Anhalt setting a blazing new top average speed of 173.004 miles per hour — the fastest in the race’s history.

Organizers called the achievement “monumental,” noting that Anhalt’s performance pushed the limits of what’s possible on the open road. “John’s precision, skill, and fearless driving have raised the bar for everyone in the BBORR community,” the organization said in a statement.
The Big Bend Open Road Race is one of the most unique and challenging open-road events in the country, drawing racers from around the world to test their limits on the long, scenic stretches of highway between Fort Stockton and Sanderson.
Fans and fellow drivers congratulated Anhalt across social media for his record-breaking run — a milestone that cements his name in BBORR history.
