RULE Gallery will present Natural Havoc, a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Sandy Skoglund, opening October 10 at its Marfa location. The show will run through November 29, with gallery hours Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A reception with the artist in attendance will be held Friday, October 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by an artist walkthrough on Saturday, October 11, at 11 a.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
Skoglund is renowned for her vividly staged environments that blur the lines between photography, sculpture, and installation. Over the past five decades, she has developed a distinctive visual language, transforming everyday settings into surreal, dreamlike scenes charged with color and movement.
Natural Havoc highlights this inventive process with selections from Skoglund’s Outtakes series—alternate views of her original photographic compositions—alongside shadow boxes with sculptural objects, drawings, and Polaroids that reveal the evolution of her ideas. The exhibition also features her Eyeflakes, hybrid works combining snowflake structures and photographs of eyes, created for her monumental installation Winter.
A centerpiece of the show is Revenge of the Goldfish (1981), one of Skoglund’s most celebrated images. By pairing finished works with experimental materials, Natural Havoc invites visitors into the artist’s imagination and creative process.
The Marfa exhibition coincides with Enchanting Nature, a major Skoglund retrospective at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, providing West Texas audiences with a more intimate look at the artist’s career.
Sandy Skoglund (b. 1946, Weymouth, MA) has exhibited worldwide, and her work is held in collections including the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Denver Art Museum, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey.
