Sid Balman Jr., a Pulitzer-nominated war correspondent and author, is set to release his newest novel The Mural on February 17, 2026. Balman, who teaches at Sul Ross State University and lives in Alpine, continues his exploration of contemporary American issues through fiction, following his award-winning Seventh Flag trilogy.
The Mural is inspired by the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, where nineteen children and two teachers were killed. The book addresses themes of violent radicalism, generational trauma, cancel culture, and the role of art in community healing.
The story follows Jasper Losoya, an artist from the fictional West Texas town of Grape Valley, who is commissioned to paint murals honoring victims of a school shooting. Losoya begins his work after returning from Pompeii, where he has been restoring an ancient mural with his assistant, Coraline Larkin, a young woman from Belfast who lost her father and her hearing in a bombing.
As Losoya’s commemorative mural takes shape, his art ignites controversy over censorship and cancel culture, ultimately reaching the U.S. Supreme Court. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of what Balman describes as a “half-mast nation” grappling with one tragedy after another.
Balman, who has reported from war zones around the world, brings his journalist’s eye to the modern American West in a story that blends personal loss with national debate.
