Sul Ross to host free Saturday STEM camps for middle schoolers

Sul Ross State University will host two free, hands-on STEM camps this fall for middle school students from across the Big Bend region.

The programs, designed for 5th–8th graders, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Museum of the Big Bend and will combine science, creativity and problem solving with guidance from Sul Ross faculty and community professionals.

The first session, Peak Performance Saturday STEM Camp, takes place Sept. 13 and focuses on six life pillars: physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, occupational and financial. Students will explore strategies for personal performance, STEM career pathways in health sciences, and take part in hands-on activities. Presenters include Dr. Veronica Arredondo, Mary Schwartze and Jawanna Sanderson.

The second camp, H₂O & You Saturday STEM Camp, will be held Oct. 4 and will focus on water science and conservation. Students will learn about geology, biology and environmental science careers, and conduct experiments such as coding irrigation systems. Faculty experts Dr. Kevin Urbanczyk and Dr. Chris Ritzi will lead activities.

Both camps include free lunch and require registration at https://sites.google.com/view/middleschoolsolarcamp/home.
