Chinati Foundation’s Artists in Residence Program Continues Donald Judd’s Vision

The Chinati Foundation in Marfa has long been known as an international hub for contemporary art, and a key part of that legacy is its Artists in Residence program, established in 1989 by the museum’s founder, Donald Judd.

Designed to support artists of all ages, disciplines, and backgrounds, the program provides four to six artists annually with a two-month residency in Marfa. Each artist receives an apartment on the museum grounds and a studio space in downtown Marfa, creating an environment that fosters both creative solitude and community engagement.

Residencies often culminate in open studios, public performances, or site-specific installations, which have become a vital extension of Chinati’s exhibition program. These presentations not only allow artists to experiment and share their work but also enrich the cultural dialogue of the region, offering the public unique opportunities to engage with contemporary art in progress.

Since its founding, the program has hosted more than 190 artists from around the globe, shaping a dynamic and ever-evolving complement to Chinati’s permanent collection.

The Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation provides generous support for the program, ensuring that Judd’s original vision—of Marfa as a place where art and life intersect—continues to thrive.
