Sul Ross State University has appointed Cynthia Gomez as Interim Executive Director of the Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) in Eagle Pass and Alpine.
Gomez has more than 20 years of service with the SBDC, including the past eight as a Senior Business Advisor. She has achieved all four levels of Business Advisor Certification and helped small business owners navigate challenges in finance, planning, management, human resources, marketing, and accounting software.
“I am honored to serve as Interim Executive Director and remain committed to helping local businesses thrive,” Gomez said. “The SBDC plays a crucial role in fostering economic growth across the Middle Rio Grande and West Texas regions, and I look forward to continuing this mission in my new capacity.”
In addition to her work with the SBDC, Gomez has 13 years of real estate experience as a licensed Realtor and has served as an adjunct instructor. She earned both her BBA (2003) and MBA in International Business (2004) from Texas A&M International University.
Her dedication has been recognized with multiple State Star Awards from the Southwest SBDC Network (2018, 2019, 2022) and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
Dr. Sumantra Sengupta, Dean of the Rio Grande College of Business, welcomed the appointment:
“I am delighted to congratulate and welcome Cynthia to her new role in envisioning and leading the strategic transformation and continued delivery of economic impact in our region via SBDC services under the broader Texas Southwest SBDC charter. I look forward to working with her and her team in delivering value-added impact for our student body through combined efforts between the Rio Grande College of Business and the SBDC network.”
This leadership change follows Sul Ross President Dr. Carlos Hernandez’s July 2025 decision to align the Alpine and Eagle Pass SBDC centers under the Rio Grande College of Business, a move aimed at strengthening student engagement and regional impact.
