Thanks to the efforts of the Presidio County Historical Commission, South Presidio County is receiving long-overdue recognition for its rich history and culture.
On Sunday, a Texas Historical Marker was unveiled at La Junta de los Ríos, the historic confluence of the Río Grande and Río Conchos. The dedication included a guided tour to the riverbanks where the two rivers meet, a site of profound cultural and historical significance for the region’s Indigenous peoples and early settlers.
Participants also visited a nearby cemetery dating back to at least the early 1800s, offering a powerful reminder of the generations who shaped the area’s history.
This marker highlights the importance of La Junta as a crossroads of cultures and a vital chapter in the story of West Texas.
