A lighthearted town prank nearly turned serious when two Marathon residents were threatened with criminal charges over a traveling sofa. Now, the incident has sparked something no one expected: the launch of the town’s first-ever CouchElla Festival.
It all began when Danny Self, owner of the Marathon Motel & RV Park, left an old couch by the roadside. Instead of being hauled away, it took on a second life — popping up in front of the Gage Hotel, the French Co. Grocery, the bank, and even Post Park. Locals snapped photos, and the prank quickly became a running joke across town.
But when the sofa was staged at the town sign, officials stepped in. The two residents involved faced the threat of felony commercial dumping charges — a move the community rallied against. After heated phone calls and widespread support, the charges were dropped.
Rather than dwell on the dust-up, Marathon turned the saga into celebration. Thus was born CouchElla, a new festival honoring the spirit, humor, and resilience of the town.
The inaugural event, set for October 4, 2025, at the Marathon Motel & RV Park, will feature headliner Craig Carter along with support from Hwy 118 Production, Desert Ghost Distillery, the French Co. Grocery, and more. Proceeds benefit the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and Marathon Health Clinic.
“CouchElla is about taking something absurd and making it joyful,” said local resident Ty Osborn. “What started as a couch prank and the threat of charges has become a festival that celebrates our community.”
