Big Bend’s Fossil Discovery Exhibit: Fun, Education, and Adventure

Just eight miles north of Panther Junction, visitors can step back millions of years in time at the Fossil Discovery Exhibit, an award-winning open-air “mini museum” that brings the region’s geological past to life.

The exhibit showcases fossils found within the park, paired with colorful artistic renditions that tell the stories of ancient creatures that once roamed and swam these lands. Families will find panoramic views, hands-on fossil displays, shaded picnic areas, and even fossil-themed play structures for children. Visitors can climb inside the jaws of a giant Tyrannosaurus rex or Deinosuchus, adding a playful twist to the prehistoric experience.

The Fossil Discovery Exhibit is open 24/7, making it easy to fit into any schedule. By day, it offers exploration and education; by night, the surrounding promontory serves as an ideal spot for stargazing beneath Big Bend’s famously dark skies.

The site is fully wheelchair accessible, with tactile displays designed for visitors with vision impairments, ensuring the experience is open to everyone.

Whether you’re seeking an educational adventure, a place for kids to play, or simply a shady spot to unwind, the Fossil Discovery Exhibit continues to be one of the most unique attractions in Big Bend National Park.
