Explore the Desert After Dark: Night Hike at Big Bend Ranch State Park

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, adventurers are invited to experience the Chihuahuan Desert like never before with a Desert Adaptations Night Hike hosted by Texas Parks and Wildlife at Big Bend Ranch State Park.

This special night hike along the Las Burras Trail offers a guided exploration of how desert life—from plants and animals to human cultures—has adapted to thrive in one of the most rugged and remote ecosystems in Texas.

Led by a knowledgeable park ranger, the hike promises a hands-on learning experience that includes scorpion spotting, spider snuffing, and discussions about common desert myths and the survival strategies of nocturnal creatures. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the desert’s delicate balance and how living things respond to extreme conditions, particularly after the sun sets.

The trail covers approximately 2 miles round trip and is suitable for most fitness levels.
