If you’ve ever wanted to stand inside a giant telescope dome and imagine what astronomers see when they scan the skies, McDonald Observatory offers a rare and unforgettable experience atop Mt. Locke in far West Texas.
The 82-inch Otto Struve Telescope Guided Tour is your chance to go behind the scenes at one of the most iconic telescopes in the United States. Built in 1939, the Otto Struve Telescope was the first major research instrument at McDonald Observatory and remains a cornerstone of astronomical history.
A 75-Minute Journey Through Science and Time
This 75-minute guided experience begins at the McDonald Observatory Visitors Center. From there, guests are transported to the summit of Mt. Locke, where they are greeted by the towering dome that houses the 82-inch telescope.
