Sul Ross Announces Downing Power Consulting as Presenting Sponsor for Live at Gallego Concert

Sul Ross State University has announced Downing Power Consulting, Inc. as the Presenting Sponsor of the second annual Live at Gallego concert, the university’s signature fundraiser for athletic facility improvements.

The event will take place Friday, Sept. 26, at the Pete P. Gallego Center in Alpine and will feature Texas country music star Aaron Watson, with an opening performance by Jason Martinez.

Downing Power Consulting, based in Midland, is led by Sul Ross alumnus Lawrence R. Downing, a 1982 graduate who earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology. Downing described his time at Sul Ross as formative, reflecting fondly on adventures throughout Big Bend and time spent with friends in Fort Davis and Lajitas.

“I enjoyed every minute while I was there,” Downing said. “Some of my best memories are from time spent in Big Bend, Lajitas, and weekend trips to the Fort Davis Drug Store.”

After working in the oil and gas industry, Downing transitioned to the electric utility sector in 1999 and founded Downing Power Consulting in 2008. The firm specializes in helping Texas businesses navigate energy procurement in the state’s deregulated electricity market.

“Sponsoring this concert is not just about giving back — it’s personal,” Downing said. “Sul Ross shaped my life in ways I’ll always be grateful for, and I’m honored to support the next generation of student-athletes and campus leaders.”

The Live at Gallego concert debuted in 2024 and raised over $80,000 for improvements to campus athletic facilities. This year’s proceeds will continue to support upgrades benefiting student-athletes, students, and fans across the Big Bend region.
