Sul Ross State Earns Rare Dual Carnegie Distinction for Research and Opportunity

Sul Ross State University has been nationally recognized with two prestigious 2025 Carnegie Classification designations, marking it as one of only 33 institutions in the country—and the smallest—to earn both Research College and University (RCU) and Opportunity College and University (OCU) status.

The dual recognition places Sul Ross in rare company, with Texas A&M International being the only other Texas institution to receive both designations, though in a higher enrollment category.

The new Carnegie metrics assess access—based on enrollment of Pell Grant and underserved students relative to local demographics—and alumni earnings, comparing graduates’ median incomes eight years after enrollment to peers with only a high school education.

Sul Ross earned an access score of 1.81 and an earnings score of 1.54 out of 3, ranking third among 39 institutions in the Mixed Undergraduate/Graduate Small category—behind only Manhattan College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

“I’m incredibly proud that these Carnegie designations recognize Sul Ross State University’s academic research rigor and inclusive mission,” said Provost Bernie Cantens. “They affirm the outstanding work of our faculty and staff in advancing research excellence, expanding educational opportunity for the students and communities we serve, and promoting social mobility throughout our region.”

Sul Ross’s RCU designation reflects nearly $4.9 million in research and development expenditures since 2023. It is one of only three institutions in its classification to receive the RCU label and the only public institution in that group.

The university’s classification as a Mixed Undergraduate/Graduate Small institution recognizes its academic diversity and growth trajectory, including planned doctoral programs and enrollment expansion.
