Sul Ross State University President Carlos Hernandez has announced the appointment of John Klingemann, Ph.D., as Vice President for Development and Advancement.
Klingemann, a Brewster County native and graduate of Alpine High School, returned to Sul Ross last November to serve as Director of the Museum of the Big Bend and Assistant Vice President of Advancement, as well as a professor in the Department of History. He began serving as interim vice president following the departure of Paul Herring and now steps into the permanent role.
In addition to his new responsibilities, Klingemann will continue overseeing museum operations while a search for a new director is underway.
Klingemann earned his bachelor’s degree in Spanish and master’s degree in history from Sul Ross before working with the Center for Big Bend Studies and as Curator of Public Programs and Exhibits at the Museum of the Big Bend. He later completed his doctorate in Latin American History at the University of Arizona and received a Fulbright Fellowship for research in Mexico.
He joined Angelo State University in 2007 as a professor of Latin American History, eventually serving as Chair of the History Department and later as Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. He also directed the Mayer Museum, a 32,000-square-foot facility in San Angelo focused on science and regional culture.
“John’s connection and commitment to Sul Ross and to the Big Bend area have already yielded positive results,” said Hernandez. “He is a great fit and a proven asset to the university.”
