McDonald Observatory Hiring Science Operations Manager for Hobby-Eberly Telescope

The University of Texas at Austin is accepting applications for a full-time Science Operations Manager position at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET), located at McDonald Observatory, 16 miles from Fort Davis. This leadership role offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to cutting-edge astronomical research.

The Science Operations Manager will oversee night-time operations, manage telescope support staff, monitor and report on HET performance, and help guide research programs using one of the world’s largest optical telescopes. The position also includes opportunities for conducting personal research and participating in outreach and facility management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage scientific and engineering support operations
  • Supervise and train night-time operations staff
  • Monitor telescope metrics and report to scientific boards and committees
  • Conduct research and submit proposals as PI or co-PI
  • Serve as a resident astronomer approximately two nights per month
  • Coordinate with engineering teams and conduct data analysis
  • Participate in emergency response and observatory-wide duties

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field
  • Minimum five years in a collaborative service astronomy role
  • At least two years in a scientific operational leadership position
  • Research experience in optical astronomy
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Valid driver’s license and eligibility to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with optical and near-IR spectroscopy
  • Familiarity with fiber-fed integral field spectroscopy
  • Demonstrated adaptability and leadership in complex scientific environments

Salary: $110,000+ depending on experience

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week with required night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Occasional travel required.
