Marfa-Based Artist Mary Baxter Draws Inspiration from Big Bend Landscapes

For more than two decades, artist Mary Baxter has called the Big Bend region home, translating the rugged beauty of Far West Texas into paintings and sculptures now featured in galleries across the state.

Baxter first arrived in the area after leasing a ranch southwest of Marfa to raise yearling cattle. Living alone most of the time, she spent her days checking water, feeding livestock, and training horses. Over time, the expansive landscape began to shape her creative work, leading her to sketch and paint her surroundings.

Before digital photography became widespread, Baxter relied on Alpine—two and a half hours away—for film development. That distance led her to adopt a practice of using field sketches and handwritten notes for reference, a method she continues to favor.

In the years that followed, Baxter supported her art by training and trading horses and working seasons on the high-goal polo circuit in California and Florida. Today, she works full time as a painter and sculptor based in Marfa.

Baxter’s work is represented at several galleries, including:
