Fort Davis is working to manage a surging wild burro population, with locals estimating between 400 and 500 donkeys in the area—nearly double the ideal number. While burros have roamed the region since the 1600s, their increasing numbers are now prompting relocation efforts. The community, in partnership with Texas Equine Xperience and Sanctuary, is rehoming the animals, many of which will serve as therapy companions for veterans, children, and seniors. A recent roundup relocated 20 burros, with plans for another before July.
