The Sul Ross State University Department of Nursing has been awarded $116,964 from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board through the Nursing Shortage Reduction Program (NSRP). The grant is aimed at recruiting, retaining, and enrolling additional nursing students.
The funding will be used to enhance the department’s simulation lab with the purchase of a birthing mannequin, giving students hands-on experience with maternal nursing care. Additional resources will support classroom technology upgrades and professional development.
“Birthing scenarios will focus on psychosocial-cultural concepts encountered in patients through reproductive events,” said Dr. Minerva Gonzales, director of nursing. “This supports student success and confidence as students become more familiar with maternal nursing care.”
Simulation-based learning is a key strategy in the department’s efforts to promote student success and improve recruitment and retention.
The grant targets a 10 percent increase in nursing program enrollment by August 2026.
