A wildfire burning in the Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protection Area, just across the Rio Grande from Big Bend National Park, has prompted a significant response from Mexican forestry authorities, according to a social media update shared by Friends of Big Bend National Park.
The National Forestry Commission of Mexico (CONAFOR) reported earlier this week that more than 380 firefighters are currently working to contain the blaze. The response also includes four helicopters and two bulldozer teams cutting firebreaks to limit the fire’s spread.
While the fire is within a protected area in northern Coahuila, it is not currently threatening any developed areas, according to the update.
The Maderas del Carmen region lies just south of the U.S.-Mexico border and is considered a critical ecological counterpart to Big Bend National Park. Environmental advocates and park supporters often monitor conditions across the border closely due to the ecological continuity between the two protected areas.
