eff Fisher will present a public talk on his family’s deep roots in the Davis Mountains region at the next Fort Davis Historical Society gathering, scheduled for Tuesday, April 15 at 6 p.m. at the Overland Trail Museum, 511 N. Fort Street.
Fisher will recount the story of his great-grandfather Jess Cunningham Fisher, who moved to the Davis Mountains from Missouri in the 1890s and married Winnie Estelle Davis. The talk will also explore the family’s earlier history, including the survival of Fisher’s Cherokee ancestors during the Trail of Tears.
Fisher plans to highlight the legacy of his great-grandfather—a Baptist minister who preached love and unity—and his marriage to a Cherokee woman. He will also discuss the Fisher family’s longtime operation of a ranch in Madera Canyon and their multi-generational contributions to the local community.
The event is free and open to the public.
