Sul Ross State University welcomed 164 4-H and FFA members from across the region on Wednesday, April 2, for a day of Career Development Events (CDEs) hosted by the College of Agriculture, Life and Physical Sciences (ALPS).
Participants represented 10 high school FFA chapters and six county 4-H clubs, competing in five CDEs: Agricultural Products Identification, Horse Evaluation, Livestock Skill-a-Thon, Veterinary Science, and Wildlife & Recreation Management. Events were led by Sul Ross faculty, Texas AgriLife Extension personnel, students, and local volunteers.
This year marked the first formal collaboration between Sul Ross and Texas AgriLife Extension to host multiple District 6 4-H events, which serve as qualifiers for the state-level Texas 4-H Roundup in June.
Students from Dr. Carl Igo’s Agricultural Leadership course also played key roles in event coordination. Katlyn Barnett, Madison Deskovich, Hope Heredia, Sterling Inman, and James Tinkler worked throughout the semester to help secure materials, animals, and volunteer support.
Sul Ross has hosted this event for decades, continuing a tradition of providing hands-on learning opportunities for youth in agricultural education dating back to the 1950s.
