Marathon’s First Schoolhouse Bell Restored After 37 Years

The original bell from Marathon’s first schoolhouse has been restored and placed at the Marathon History Museum, decades after it was nearly lost during a World War II scrap metal drive. Donated by early pioneer Ben Shepard, the bell was rescued twice from being discarded by local resident Thos. Henderson. Thanks to community support, the bell now stands as a symbol of Marathon’s enduring commitment to preserving its local history.
