Sul Ross Theatre to Open Next to Normal April 4

Sul Ross State University’s Theatre Program will open its spring musical, Next to Normal, on April 4 at the new Sul Ross Studio Theatre, located in the Museum of the Big Bend’s One Arts Building (Room 105). The production will run weekends through April 13, with a special Thursday performance on April 10.

Olivia Pertuso stars as Diana Goodman, a wife and mother living with bipolar disorder following a major trauma in early adulthood. Pertuso, a Sul Ross alumna with both a B.F.A. and M.L.A. in Theatre, Communication, and Music, currently serves as part-time theatre faculty at the university.

She has appeared in numerous Sul Ross productions, including Oleanna, Silent Sky, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, The Cake, Blithe Spirit, The Wolves, and Hair. With Theatre of the Big Bend, she has performed in Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Nunsense.

Next to Normal, by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, explores mental illness and family dynamics with a powerful rock score and poignant storytelling.
