The Judd Foundation has announced that Donald Judd’s Architecture Office, located in downtown Marfa, will open to the public in September 2025 following the completion of a major restoration and rebuilding project.
The Architecture Office, one of eleven Judd-associated buildings in Marfa listed on the National Register of Historic Places, suffered a setback in 2021 when a building fire halted construction. The Foundation will now resume and complete the final phase of the project, originally begun in 2018. Restoration work has focused on stabilizing the structure, preserving Judd’s design elements, and implementing sustainable building systems.
The two-story building, originally constructed in the early 20th century as a commercial property, was purchased by Judd in 1990 and renovated for architectural work on the ground floor and residential space above. Once reopened, it will join Judd Foundation’s guided public tours and feature permanent installations of Judd’s architectural models, furniture, and a second-floor living space with works by John Chamberlain and Alvar Aalto.
Energy efficiency upgrades—including solar panels, recycled insulation, and a passive cooling system—have been incorporated without compromising the building’s historic character. The Foundation notes the Architecture Office as one of six long-term restoration projects in Marfa. Others include La Mansana de Chinati/The Block and the recently completed Print and Archive Buildings.
The opening on Saturday, September 20, 2025, will include a community celebration and public programs. Details will be announced in the coming months.
