Hundreds of Troops Could Be Headed to Presidio County, But Officials Lack Firm Details

Presidio County and surrounding areas may see an influx of over 500 active-duty military personnel in the coming weeks as part of the federal government’s border security efforts, with Marfa expected to host the largest concentration of troops. Department of Defense (DOD) officials have discussed using local airports, including the Marfa Municipal Airport, for encampments, but county officials say they lack concrete details on how the deployment will impact the region.

County officials, including Presidio County Precinct 4 Commissioner David Beebe and County Emergency Management Coordinator Gary Mitschke, have acknowledged the potential economic benefits of leasing land and infrastructure improvements. However, concerns remain over transparency and the effects on local tourism, civil rights, and daily life. Commissioner Deirdre Heisler has expressed frustration over the lack of direct communication from the DOD, calling for town halls in Marfa and Presidio to address public concerns.
