Brewster County Allocates Over $427,000 for Operation Lone Star in FY2025

Brewster County has allocated more than $427,000 for Operation Lone Star in fiscal year 2025, focusing on bolstering law enforcement capabilities and enhancing border security efforts. The grant, which runs from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2025, covers a range of budget items, from personnel costs to specialized equipment.

What Is Operation Lone Star?
Operation Lone Star is a state-led initiative aimed at strengthening security along the Texas-Mexico border. Launched to combat human trafficking, drug smuggling, and illegal immigration, the operation involves deploying Texas National Guard soldiers and Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers to support U.S. Border Patrol efforts. By enhancing law enforcement presence and resources in border communities, the operation seeks to deter unlawful crossings and improve public safety.

Personnel Costs Dominate Budget
The bulk of the funding is directed towards personnel expenses, with over $285,000 allocated to cover salaries and fringe benefits for certified peace officers and support staff. This includes a $35,000 budget for overtime pay for jailers and support staff involved in the intake, processing, and transportation of detainees. Additionally, three sheriff’s deputies—Carey, Ybarra, and Chopelas—are listed with salaries and benefits totaling $80,085 each. An additional $10,519 is designated for overtime pay for sheriff’s deputies, excluding those already funded by the county.

Equipment and Technology Upgrades
The budget also includes significant investments in equipment and technology. Brewster County has earmarked $67,080 for a Ford F250 to support new deputies under the Operation Lone Star initiative. An additional $50,000 is allocated to upgrade surveillance systems at the Brewster County Jail to improve security for inmates and staff. The county plans to spend $35,000 on an annual subscription to KologiK software to enhance data management and operational efficiency.

Operational Expenses
The grant allocates $22,500 for fuel costs for three full-time deputies, based on last year’s usage, and $12,500 for vehicle maintenance expenses, such as oil changes and tire replacements. An additional $5,000 is set aside for record management supplies to handle the increased inmate population, including paper, storage bins, and printer ink.

Looking Ahead
As Brewster County moves forward with its Operation Lone Star initiatives, the funding aims to enhance law enforcement readiness and border security capabilities, aligning with the broader objectives of the state-led operation.
