ALPINE, TEXAS — The Center for Big Bend Studies is pleased to welcome Dr. Justin Garnett to its faculty, bringing expertise in experimental archaeology and digital artifact replication.
Dr. Garnett’s research focuses on the manufacture, maintenance, and discard of stone and bone tools in ancient cultures. His work spans the North American Paleoindian period, Holocene archaeology in the American Southwest, early agriculture, and the European Upper Paleolithic. He uses 3D printing and digital technologies to reconstruct artifacts, helping to advance archaeological research and public education.
Dr. Garnett holds a B.A. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. He is actively involved in the World Atlatl Association and co-manages basketmakeratlatl.com, a website dedicated to Indigenous American spearthrowers. Additionally, he shares 3D printable artifact models through Thingiverse under a Creative Commons license.
Excited to continue his Paleoindian research in the Big Bend region, Dr. Garnett brings cutting-edge methodologies and public engagement to the center’s ongoing efforts.
