The City of Marfa is preparing to launch long-awaited street repairs near the Marfa Housing Authority, targeting W. Madrid, S. Kelly, and S. Abbott streets. Funded by a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture, the project aims to enhance living conditions for low- to moderate-income residents in rural areas.
Preliminary engineering, conducted by Frank X. Spencer & Associates of El Paso, included core sampling and the development of technical specifications for the repairs. The project was recently put out for bid, with a deadline of February 20. Once a contractor is selected, the city hopes to complete the repairs by August.
In addition to the Housing Authority repairs, Marfa has budgeted $2.1 million for further street improvements financed by a 2022 tax note. This second phase, currently under preliminary engineering with JACOB/MARTIN, includes streets such as Third, Mesa, Gonzales, Summer, and Edinburg. Plans for these repairs will be presented to the mayor and City Council in the coming weeks, with an anticipated start date in September.
These infrastructure projects aim to improve Marfa’s roadways and support community growth while addressing critical needs for residents.
