Congressman Tony Gonzales has introduced his first bill of the 119th Congress, the Security First Act, aimed at addressing issues related to border security and organized crime.
The proposed legislation would require the federal government to consider designating Mexican drug cartels and the Tren de Aragua gang as foreign terrorist organizations. It also seeks to allocate additional grant funding for state and local law enforcement agencies to enhance border security operations.
“Bad policies embolden cartels, fuel humanitarian crises, and put innocent Americans in harm’s way,” Gonzales said. He also noted the impact these practices have on South and West Texans, stating that the communities he serves are directly affected by the challenges at the border.
Gonzales described the bill as “a step in the right direction toward our shared goals of implementing tangible border security solutions.”
The Security First Act highlights Gonzales’ efforts to address public safety concerns and strengthen resources for law enforcement agencies near the U.S.-Mexico border.
