Drivers in the Marathon and Study Butte areas may notice new mobile camera units positioned at key highway intersections. The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office recently deployed the units, which were purchased with grant funding from Governor Greg Abbott’s office, to assist in combating criminal activity along major roadways.
The advanced camera systems are designed to help deputies recover stolen vehicles and oilfield equipment, as well as identify other criminal activity. Brewster County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the units will not be used for monitoring traffic offenses but are instead focused on enhancing public safety and aiding law enforcement efforts.
“Our highways are often used by criminals fleeing more populated areas like Odessa and Midland to access the border,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “These units will aid in deterring and apprehending these suspects.”
Flexible Deployment Across the County
The portable units will be rotated to different areas in Brewster County as needed, ensuring that law enforcement can respond dynamically to emerging concerns. By strategically deploying the cameras, the Sheriff’s Office aims to improve its ability to monitor high-traffic areas while providing a visible deterrent to criminal activity.
