Camino del Rio, officially State Highway 170, offers one of the most stunning and adventurous drives in Texas. Spanning over 30 miles between Lajitas and Presidio, this stretch of highway closely follows the Rio Grande, winding through arroyos, scaling steep grades, and hugging dramatic canyon walls.
A highlight of the route is the “Big Hill,” featuring one of the steepest highway grades in Texas. At its summit, breathtaking views stretch 75 miles east to the Chisos Mountains and west into Colorado Canyon and the distant mountain ranges of Mexico. Much of the highway traverses Big Bend Ranch State Park, offering travelers numerous scenic pullovers and river access points.
Before embarking on the drive, visitors can stop at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center in Lajitas for maps and interpretive materials.
Important Safety Precautions
Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution on Camino del Rio. The road is narrow with limited shoulders, and the steep grade of the “Big Hill” can be particularly challenging for larger vehicles like motorhomes and trailers. Reliable brakes are essential, as the route has a history of serious accidents.
Adding to the adventure, open grazing is permitted along the roadway, meaning drivers may encounter cows, horses, burros, or mules near or on the pavement. Slower speeds are encouraged to fully enjoy the scenery—and to stay safe.
