This morning, Terlingua Fire & EMS (TFEMS) hosted a comprehensive live fire training exercise, bringing together twenty-two firefighters from various fire departments across the region. The session included participants from Alpine FD, Terlingua FD, Marathon FD, Ozona FD, and Big Bend National Park.
The training focused on advanced firefighting techniques such as hydraulic ventilation, which involves using an external opening paired with a hose line to remove smoke and superheated gases from a structure. Firefighters also practiced penciling, a method where water is burst above the fire in short spurts to create a rain-down effect that lowers the thermal layer and helps locate the fire’s origin for final extinguishment. Additionally, the exercise covered procedures for dealing with flashover scenarios, which involve the simultaneous ignition of combustible materials and fuel gases within a fire room.
Captain J. Thomason, AEMT and Public Information Officer at TFEMS, emphasized the importance of rigorous training, stating, “The more we sweat in training, the less we bleed in battle.” This mantra highlights the department’s commitment to preparedness and safety.
These training exercises are crucial for enhancing the skills and teamwork of firefighters, ensuring they are ready to handle emergency situations effectively. The collaborative nature of the training also strengthens the bond and mutual support among different fire departments in the region.
TFEMS continues to prioritize high-level training and public safety, reinforcing their readiness to protect the community and respond to emergencies. The department reminds everyone to stay safe and appreciate the dedicated service of firefighters who work tirelessly to safeguard lives and property.
