Early Monday morning, a high-speed pursuit unfolded south of Marathon when a vehicle, evading a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint, led authorities on a dangerous chase. Brewster County Deputies, assisted by the Pecos County Sheriff’s Office, engaged in an over 40-mile pursuit on Highway 385, with speeds exceeding 110 miles per hour.
The chase culminated when Pecos County Sheriff’s deputies successfully deployed Stop Sticks, bringing the vehicle to a halt. Several occupants fled the vehicle, including the driver, who was later apprehended by a Brewster County Deputy. The driver, identified as Luis Padilla-Canales, faces charges of evading arrest with a vehicle, a third-degree felony, and evading arrest on foot, a Class A misdemeanor.
Border Patrol agents also apprehended an individual who was in the country illegally from Mexico. This occupant, along with Padilla-Canales, could potentially face additional charges related to smuggling persons.
This incident highlights the ongoing collaboration among local law enforcement agencies in addressing crime and ensuring public safety across the region.
