Big Bend Ranch State Park, managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife, is excited to announce its inaugural Christmas Bird Count, scheduled for January 2, 2025. The event will kick off at the historic Fort Leaton State site at 7:15 AM, and participation is open to everyone, with pre-registration required.
The Christmas Bird Count, a national tradition since 1900, serves as the longest-running community science bird project in the United States. Originally conceived as a conservation effort to count birds rather than hunt them, the event now draws bird enthusiasts nationwide who gather data critical for assessing the health of bird populations.
Participants in Big Bend Ranch State Park’s bird count will have the opportunity to explore the park and record sightings of various bird species throughout the day. This initiative not only supports bird conservation but also allows participants to engage directly with nature in one of Texas’s most scenic environments.
Entry to the park will be free for all registered participants on the day of the event. Those interested in joining this conservation effort and spending the day surrounded by the natural beauty of Big Bend Ranch State Park are encouraged to register by emailing Stephen Thomas at stephen.thomas@tpwd.texas.gov.
