In a concerted effort to address funding discrepancies affecting over 100 school districts, Alpine Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart visited Austin on Monday to discuss the ongoing disputes between County Appraisal Districts (CAD) and the Comptroller’s office. These disputes have led to significant underfunding for districts including Alpine ISD.
Dr. Rinehart, alongside Orange Grove ISD Superintendent Eddie Hesseltine and Josh Sanderson, Executive Director of the Equity Center, met with staff from the Lieutenant Governor’s office and several state Representatives and Senators. The group is spearheading a statewide initiative aimed at rectifying the funding challenges faced by rural school districts.
During the meeting, Dr. Rinehart outlined the root causes of the underfunding issues, detailing their impacts on the students and staff of Alpine ISD. She also proposed potential legislative solutions that could ensure adequate funding for affected districts.
The initiative by these education leaders underscores a critical push for legislative action in the upcoming session, aimed at supporting the educational needs of rural communities across Texas.
