Dr. Minerva Gonzales, Director of Nursing at Sul Ross State University, and Dr. James Luecke, a long-serving West Texas physician, received prestigious accolades at the recent National Rural Health Day Educational and Recruiting Fair held in Odessa.
The fair, organized by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in partnership with the Area Health Education Center of the Permian Basin and the Texas Department of Agriculture State Office of Rural Health, took place on November 20. It drew nearly 400 attendees, including students and faculty from several regional institutions such as TTUHSC, Odessa College, Midland College, Sul Ross State University, and the University of Texas-Permian Basin. Participants included 60 rural Certified Nursing Assistant students from Alpine, Crane, McCamey, and Grandfalls-Royalty school districts, along with regional resident physicians and representatives from 20 rural healthcare organizations.
At the event, Dr. Gonzales was awarded the Dr. Charles Sponsel Rural Healthcare Pioneer Faculty award. This accolade recognized her dedication to rural nursing education and her commitment to service in underserved areas. Dr. Luecke received the Dr. Charles Sponsel Rural Healthcare Pioneer Clinician award, honoring his 36 years of healthcare service and delivery in the Big Bend region.
The awards highlight the crucial role educators and healthcare providers play in sustaining rural communities. The annual National Rural Health Day is aimed at celebrating and promoting the essential services that rural healthcare workers provide across the nation.
