Sul Ross State University has established a new College of Health Sciences, appointing Dean Culpepper, Ph.D., as its dean, effective November 1. The announcement was made following approval by the Texas State University System Board of Regents at their November meeting.
The newly formed College of Health Sciences encompasses the Nursing, Kinesiology, and Health Sciences programs, previously part of the College of Agriculture, Life, and Physical Sciences. This strategic realignment aims to enhance educational offerings and focus more directly on health-related disciplines.
Executive Vice President and Provost Bernie Cantens, Ph.D., expressed enthusiasm for Dr. Culpepper’s leadership, noting his extensive background in educational leadership, curriculum development, and program building. “We welcome Dr. Dean Culpepper to our growing academic leadership team,” said Dr. Cantens. “We are excited about his vision and leadership as we shape the identity and strategic direction of the new College of Health Sciences.”
Dr. Culpepper brings a robust academic and professional portfolio to Sul Ross State University. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Berry College in Georgia, followed by a master’s degree and doctoral degree in Kinesiology from the University of Houston. His career includes roles as an instructor and researcher at the University of Houston, associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Lubbock Christian University, and chair of Health and Physical Education at Eastern New Mexico University and, most recently, A&M Commerce from 2021-2024.
Additionally, Dr. Culpepper has contributed significantly to his field through service as the editor of the journal for the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, and involvement in several committees focusing on finance, research, and professional preparation. He is also a member of several prestigious organizations, including Kappa Delta Pi, the American Psychological Association, the Association of Applied Sports Psychology, and the United States Center for Coaching Excellence.
