$70K County Truck Raises Questions; Jeff Davis Officials Yet to Respond

In Jeff Davis County, the acquisition and utilization of a taxpayer-funded vehicle has sparked calls for greater transparency and accountability from local government officials. A 2023 Ram Cummins Diesel 4×4, equipped with advanced emergency vehicle lighting, a robust grill guard, running boards, and sophisticated radio equipment, has become the center of scrutiny. Originally purchased for $53,250, the vehicle underwent an additional $20,000 in enhancements, elevating its total value to over $70,000.

Despite repeated inquiries from Big Bend Times regarding the specifics of the vehicle’s allocation and usage, answers from county officials have been notably absent. Questions remain unanswered about the purpose of the vehicle’s purchase, its primary users, and the specific county business it supports.

County Judge Curtis Evans has previously indicated that the Jeff Davis County Commissioners approved the vehicle’s use on an “As Need Basis” by the Justice of the Peace, among other county elected officials and employees. However, further details about the funding sources for this purchase, including potential use of Lone Star or Stonegarden grant funds, as well as questions regarding its previous assignment to the now-dismissed EMS director, have not been addressed.

In contrast, justices of the peace in neighboring Presidio and Brewster counties use personal vehicles for county duties, underscoring the unusual decision by Jeff Davis County to allocate such a resource to a county official.

The lack of responses has intensified community demands for clear justification and transparent governance concerning the use and funding of this costly asset. As taxpayers continue to seek insights into the decision-making processes of their local governance, the need for direct and honest answers remains critical.

Ongoing efforts to engage with county officials for clarity and accountability in the management of community resources continue, reflecting a persistent pursuit for openness in Jeff Davis County’s administration.
