Alpine ISD Announces $423,000 Tax Refund After Calculation Error

In a recent oversight by the Brewster County Appraisal District (CAD), Alpine Independent School District (AISD) announced that it will be reimbursing taxpayers a total of $423,000 due to an error in property tax calculations. The miscalculation affected homesteaded property owners who are over 65 or disabled, who ended up overpaying their 2023 school taxes. AISD Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart clarified that the mistake stemmed from the CAD’s handling of recent changes in the homestead exemption value. The school district is coordinating with the CAD and Texas Education Agency to resolve the financial discrepancies and ensure that affected taxpayers are reimbursed within 90 days. This situation has also impacted the district’s budget planning for the next two years, adding complexity to their financial management.
