Sul Ross State University (SRSU) is set to expand its educational offerings in Alpine, Texas, with the creation of a new Performing Arts Center and a College of Health Sciences. These developments follow the university’s recent acquisition of two off-campus buildings for approximately $2 million.
According to the Skyline, SRSU’s student newspaper, the original Porter’s building will be converted into the Performing Arts Center, which will cater to the university’s theatre and music programs. It will include stages, offices, classrooms, and rehearsal spaces, with construction expected to begin in 90 days and completion slated for spring 2026.
The second building, previously a bank on East Holland Street, will house the new College of Health Sciences, encompassing nursing and kinesiology programs. This facility is set to open this spring.
Betse Esparza, SRSU’s director of university communications, informed the Skyline that the purchases were financed through the university’s investment fund, which includes operating funds and endowments. While the exact future uses of the buildings were initially undisclosed, Esparza mentioned, “The decision has yet to be made and will be made strictly on the assessment of need for their various departments.”
Additionally, SRSU is renovating Fletcher Hall dormitory to accommodate an additional 150 students, with construction beginning in December and aiming for a mid-summer completion.
These strategic expansions are part of SRSU’s ongoing efforts to enhance its campus facilities and broaden its academic capabilities, thereby enriching both the university and the Alpine community.
