Alpine Independent School District is making strides in providing healthier and locally-sourced food options in its cafeterias by participating in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s #FarmFreshChallenge. Under the guidance of Nutrition Director Mrs. Amanda Lujan, Alpine ISD cafeterias are now offering a variety of Texas-grown produce to students.
The initiative focuses on integrating fresh, local ingredients into school meals to support local farmers and provide nutritious options for students. Some of the Texas-grown produce featured in Alpine ISD cafeterias includes:
- Gala Apples from Top of Texas Farms in Idalou.
- Romaine and One Cut Crispy Leaf Lettuce from TrueHarvest in Belton.
- Oranges from Lone Star Citrus in Mission.
- Kale Green for sandwiches from Val Verde Vegetable Co. in McAllen.
This initiative not only enhances the quality of food served to students but also serves as an educational tool, teaching them the importance of eating locally sourced produce and understanding where their food comes from.
