The Jeff Davis County Library is set to host a special program featuring renowned local artist Jeff Smith on Saturday, November 23, at 1 p.m. Known for his breathtaking and large-scale architectural stained glass works, Smith will share insights into his artistic process and showcase images of his designs during the event.
Jeff Smith, who has a diverse background in science, biology, philosophy, religion, landscape architecture, and fine arts, found his calling in the art of stained glass. After studying with prominent German stained glass artists, Smith founded his own company, Architectural Stained Glass, in 1977. Since then, he has garnered international recognition, winning four International Design Arts Awards from the AIA/FRAA and two Corning Museum “New Glass Review” awards.
His work, which ranges from residential to public, commercial, and religious installations, can be seen across the United States, from Alaska to Florida and from New Hampshire to Hawaii. In 2000, Smith relocated from Dallas to Limpia Canyon in Fort Davis to establish his workshop, where he continues to receive acclaim for his innovative designs.
During the library event, Smith will delve into the history of stained glass, which dates back to the 11th-century cathedrals of Europe and evolved into a guild system by the medieval period. He will discuss how contemporary developments in the 1800s propelled stained glass toward architecture and fine arts, with further artistic explorations emerging in the 1960s and 70s.
The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and is free to the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to view examples of Smith’s impressive stained glass pieces, some of which are located in the tri-county area.
