In a landmark acquisition, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) has secured a 353,785-acre tract in the Big Bend region, significantly enhancing the state’s land management and conservation efforts. The property, known as Brewster Ranch, was purchased from Texas Mountain Holdings, managed by Brad Kelley.
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating, “By securing this large swath of land along our southern border, the GLO is blocking foreign adversaries from purchasing this land but also ensuring this mineral-rich property will be generating revenue for the school children of Texas.”
The Brewster Ranch, which was listed at $245,678,330 and is the largest property transaction in Texas history, offers a diverse range of habitats, from desert and river landscapes to mountainous areas. These are critical not only for biodiversity conservation but also for agricultural and recreational activities such as hunting and wildlife viewing.
The ranch’s strategic location next to Big Bend National Park and the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area forms a significant ecological buffer zone, contributing to the preservation of extensive natural resources in the Chihuahuan Desert.
This purchase is part of the GLO’s ongoing efforts to manage and utilize state lands effectively, providing a sustainable revenue stream for Texas’ educational programs while safeguarding its natural heritage.
