The 2024 Original Terlingua International Championship Chili Cook-Off returns from October 30 to November 2, bringing together two Texas staples—chili and live music—for a weekend-long celebration in Terlingua, Texas. Known as the “Grand Daddy of all chili cook-offs,” this iconic event blends the competitive spirit of chili cooking with performances by some of the Lone Star State’s top musicians.
Founded in 1967 by Frank X. Tolbert and friends, the cook-off has grown into a major cultural event, drawing chili enthusiasts and music lovers alike. Thousands gather at 22970 FM 170 in Terlingua to take part in the festivities, which include not only chili competitions but also four nights of live performances by Texas artists.
The 2024 music lineup features a diverse range of Texas talent, including The Butch Hancock Band, James McMurtry, Gary P. Nunn, and Kaitlin Butts. Starting Wednesday, October 30, and running through Saturday, November 2, the nightly performances will culminate in a closing set by Los Pinche Gringos, ensuring an unforgettable soundtrack to the weekend’s chili-fueled fun.
In addition to the music and chili, attendees can explore more than 40 vendor booths, showcasing unique goods from across the country, as well as meet Texas authors and artists. Camping is available for the entire weekend, giving “Chiliheads” the full festival experience in the heart of the desert.
Proceeds from the event benefit the ALS Association of Texas, in honor of co-founder Wick Fowler, as well as local charities, including Terlingua Schools and Terlingua Fire and EMS.
